parabens - a controversial chemical compound.

Parabens…. Dun dun dunnnnn….What is this compound and why is it causing such an uproar?

A papaben is a preservative and preservatives are incredibly important in cosmetics as they stop bacteria, fungus and other little microbes from taking over your favourite lotions and potions. They stabilize and increase the shelf life of products that otherwise would have to be stored in the fridge. They come in a variety of forms, such as the methyl, propyl, and butyl paraben. Parabens offer significant protection to the consumer being used at very low doses while at the same time affordable. Here’s where it gets complicated…

There is a debate going on over the potential side-affects and risks associated to these stabilizers. Researchers and scientists are raising concerns over long-term use and the potential link to increased breast cancer, declining sperm count and creating overall havoc to our endocrine system due to the accumulations of parabens in the body.

Here’s the BUT…. there is no scientific proof against parabens and side affects, it has merely been conjectured and concluded that they could contribute to adverse health effect over years of accumulated use and over exposures.

Health Canada and other government regulatory agencies from around the world have taken the position that in the small amounts used in personal-care products, parabens do not pose a significant health risk and see no cause for concern.

The word paraben is becoming increasingly vilified and without concrete proof should you be wary?

Essentially, the decision is up to you! At Kiss and Makeup we feel that if you have the ability to lessen exposure to something that could be an additional stressor to the body and use a non-chemical approach, then do.

We did a quick survey of the store and here is a selection of paraben free lines we retail.

For skincare - Tata Harper, sjal, REN, Principessa, Blind Barber
For body care – Prtty Peaushun, CV skinlabs, Molliderm, Routine
For cosmetics – Ilia Beauty, RMS beauty, portions of Becca and Vincent Longo
For Hair care – Rahua, new formulations of Oribe and Bumble and Bumble.

It’s always been our goal to source the best quality lines out there and with so many environmental toxins we are exposed to daily, what we repeatedly put on our skin does matter. In addition to sourcing products that are paraben free we look for organic, 100% natural, gluten-free, vegan, free of synthetic and chemical ingredients, cruelty free, sulfate-free, packaging is recyclable / biodegradable and so on.

Without having to prove via research, Kiss and Makeup has always felt the necessity to pay attention to the quality of ingredient and the quality of the companies we choose.
