We all have heard of face serums and may even use a variety of face serums already, but what the heck are they are exactly used for? You are not alone in having no idea what a serum is. They can seem confusing... they're moisturizing, but you still need to use moisturizer. They can be oily, but it's not necessarily a face oil. Let's get down to the truth of serums. What is serum?
Serum is a skincare product that you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful and targeted ingredients directly into the skin. Due to being made up of smaller molecules, serums deeply penetrate the skin to deliver all the amazing benefits of concentrated active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles and fine lines. Goodbye signs of aging!
Is serum a moisturizer?
Yes and no. Serums can be loaded with moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (an ingredient our bodies already naturally make) which helps to retain moisture in the skin. However they cannot exactly be classified as a moisturizer as they are not as rich as a cream which is designed to create a protective barrier on top of the skin. That's why we use our serums first. Lock in the good stuff!
How often should I use my serum?
Depending on the type and brand, most often we can use a serum day and night. At least once a day to cover the bases.
One last question I'd like to answer, one in which I used to ask myself - is it worth it to use a serum? ABSOLUTELY! When it comes to serums they are our skins BFF!
